Pete Sampras is a retired American tennis player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. He was born on August 12, 1971, in Washington, D.C., and began playing tennis at the age of three.
Sampras turned professional in 1988 at the age of 16 and quickly rose to prominence, winning his first Grand Slam title at the 1990 US Open. He went on to win a total of 14 Grand Slam singles titles, which was a record at the time of his retirement in 2002.
Sampras was known for his powerful serve and volley game, as well as his mental toughness and ability to come up with big shots in clutch situations. He held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 286 weeks, which is a record that stood until it was surpassed by Roger Federer.
Throughout his career, Sampras won 64 singles titles and 2 doubles titles, and he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007. He currently lives in California with his wife and children and remains involved in the sport as a commentator and occasional coach.
